A few people have commented that the extent of government-sanctioned corruption described in my thriller novel, “The Synod”, is hard to believe. The novel is inspired by real life and is meant to be educational, but fiction designed to be entertaining. It’s not breaking news. Real world corruption and the ties between politics, big money and the “deep state” are! Indeed, the most intricate plots of fiction can no longer compete with the political bombshells that have made America look like a banana republic. Russian President Putin has outwitted Republicans and Democrats, alike, playing to their greed and stupidity at every turn.
It has already been established that Trump did not “collude” with Russia. That hasn’t stopped opportunistic Democratic party politicians and former deep state persons, deeply hostile to Trump, from continuing to claim that he did. The so-called “Special Prosecutor”, Robert Mueller, spent a fortune of money, but his main accomplishment had nothing to do with Trump. Instead, he filed tax evasion charges against a former Trump campaign manager, Paul Manafort and managed to convict him. Those charges arose out of work he did for a former Ukrainian President, and has nothing remotely to do with the 2016 election. A few others were also charged, mostly with lying to FBI officials (ie: forgetting or mixing up dates during their interviews). A few guilty pleas were gathered on that.
No thanks to the “Special Counsel”, we also learned that the Clinton campaign, the Democratic Party National Committee (DNC) and the FBI, contrary to the media narrative, colluded with Russia with respect to the 2016 election. All three transferred hefty sums of money to Russian government agents. The money was paid in pursuit of a failed effort to deny Trump the Presidency. Conveniently, no one seems to know who authorized the payments. All that money was laundered through lawyers at a law firm known as “Perkins Coie”.
Election law requires all money payments to be accurately, specifically and individually accounted for, but campaign records show that the Clinton campaign simply paid the law firm $5.6 million in “legal fees”, from June 2015 to December 2016. Similarly, the DNC paid the same law firm $3.6 million for so-called “legal and compliance consulting” going back to November 2015. We know that part of the “legal fees” were diverted but we don’t know the percentage used to pay for the so-called “Steele dossier”, a salacious document that claims, without any proof, among other things, that Trump had various relations with Moscow prostitutes. None of this was disclosed by the Special Counsel. It all came from House Republicans, who subpoenaed bank records.
In spite of being informed that the Steele dossier was compiled as a result of collusion between the Democratic party and Russian operatives, the FBI and the Obama Justice Department chose not to file any charges against Hillary Clinton and/or responsible persons at the DNC. Instead, it agreed to pay $50,000 worth of taxpayer money to “continue work on the dossier”, thereby becoming complicit in the collusion with Russia. According to CNN, the $50,000 was never paid., but unspecified sums of cash were paid, supposedly to offset “expenses”. The primary “expense”, of course, would have had to have been the cost of payments to various Russians, in order to get “information” from them.
In other words, the FBI paid Kremlin-connected businessmen and Russian agents involved in an intricate plan designed to dupe American voters. The expense payments must have been very large, because the Bureau refused to disclose how much it paid. To this day, we don’t know the exact numbers. The media , meanwhile, has decided to forget about the whole affair, and to move on, as it were, to the current attempt by Democrats to drum up support in the House for impeachment.

To understand how and why the FBI ended up bankrolling Vladimir Putin, we ought to take some time to examine just how the arrangement came about.
A company named “Fusion GPS” was originally hired by the Washington Examiner, a conservative newspaper that supported Marco Rubio for President. Its job was to dig up dirt on Donald Trump. Very little came of it. After Trump became the presumed Republican nominee, however, the very same firm was hired by the Democrats. It received wads of cash from Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC, as mentioned above, all funneled through their lawyers. That cash was used to hire former British spy, Christopher Steele, who reputedly had ties to highly placed Russians.
One of the primary suppliers of information was a man by the name of Oleg Deripaska, a Belarussian oligarch, closely connected to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin. It is not clear how much Deripaska was paid, if anything, but it is worth noting that Deripaska was denied a US visa because of his alleged ties to the Russian mafia. NBC News reported that, in spite of that, the Obama administration later allowed him to travel freely to, from and within the USA. That was because the Russian government gave notice that he should be considered one of its “diplomats”. The man is widely considered to be one of President Putin’s “inner circle.”
Apparently, Steele connected with and made many payments and, in exchange for the money, Russian spies were happy to supply shocking allegations concerning Donald Trump. Mr. Steele knitted the allegations together into a report, wherein he stated, among other things, that Russia has a video showing Trump asking prostitutes to pee on a bed once slept in by former President Barack Obama.
Let us remember that a person who releases state secrets in exchange for cash commits treason. That is as true in Russia as it is in America. Perhaps, more so. Yet, there is no evidence that Deripaska or any Kremlin connected intelligence agent has ever been put on trial, jailed or otherwise punished for releasing alleged “secret” information about Trump. The “information” is obviously fake, intentionally supplied by the Kremlin for the purpose of impugning Trump. If it wasn’t, Deripaska and a lot of Russian spies would have their heads chopped off by now.
Fusion GPS is no stranger to cloak and dagger politics. In fact, it has done a lot of work for the Russian Federation. The company worked closely with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. It was retained by the international law firm, Baker Hostetler, which was representing a Russian owned company known as Prevezon. That company was owned by a Russian oligarch, Denis Katsyv, son of Pyotr Katsyv, who was Vice Premier and Minister of Transport in Moscow from 2004-12. Prevezon is registered in Cyprus, not in Russia, an island nation that is a favorite money laundering spot for Russian nationals.
Prevezon defended itself against allegations, made by the US Justice Department, that the company laundered money and property stolen in a fraud scheme uncovered by a murdered Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky. His death, under highly suspicious circumstances, led the US Congress to pass the Magnitsky Act, a sanctions measure against Russia. Ms. Veselnitskaya actively argued against the Magnitsky Act. You see, her ex-husband is Alexander Mitusov, Pyotr Katsyv’s Deputy Minister. That’s how she got the case. It’s all closely connected, and it all smells to high heaven.
Fusion GPS started working for Prevezon in 2013, ending its work in May 2017. That, of course, is AFTER the 2016 election, when the dispute was finally settled for a comparatively nominal payment of several million dollars to the US government. Interestingly, this very same Ms. Veselnitskaya visited Trump Tower on June 8, 2016 in the midst of the American presidential campaign. Emails indicate that she promised to bring dirt on Hillary Clinton. She didn’t do so, and now denies having ever promised it, claiming instead that she went there to discuss the Magnitsky Act. Nevertheless, this Russian lawyer’s visit provided an excuse for Democrats to expand the existing “collusion” scandal to embroil Donald Trump, Jr., the President’s son.
Perhaps, even more interestingly, the very same woman can also be seen on a video, sitting next to the Ambassador Michael McFaul, a man appointed by former President Obama as Ambassador to Russia, as he testifies before the US Congress. The video is from a Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Russia and Ukraine on June 14, 2016, just 5 days after she met with Donald Trump Jr.!
The Steele dossier was eventually delivered to Obama’s FBI Director, James Comey, by Senator John McCain. Neither the Senator nor the FBI Director had any problem with the report being the result of collusion between Democrats and Kremlin connected businessmen. Neither questioned Fusion GPS’ tight Russian ties. Instead of launching an investigation of the obvious, which was the collusion between the Clinton campaign/DNC and Russia, instead, the FBI leadership (a/k/a James Comey) decided to throw in tens of thousands (or more) of taxpayer money to help continue the work on the salacious dossier!
It is said that these FBI payments were eventually abandoned when the dossier became public. By that time, Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, who stood accused in the dossier of meeting and conspiring with Russian agents in Prague, used his passport to prove it was a lie. But, the FBI used the discredited dossier to get a court order approving surveillance on Trump campaign associates. Comey and his associates knowingly and intentionally used the product of Russian collusion to justify spying operations against political opponents. It was a first. The institutions of the federal government had never been weaponized against one party and in favor of another in the entire history of the America, Banana Republic style.
According to Senator Charles Grassley (R. Iowa):
“The idea that the FBI and associates of the Clinton campaign would pay Mr. Steele to investigate the Republican nominee for president in the run-up to the election raises further questions about the FBI’s independence from politics, as well as the Obama administration’s use of law enforcement and intelligence agencies for political ends.”
All of that, of course, is true. However, one big question remains…
The position, power and influence of the United States means that virtually everyone in the world has a preference in its Presidential election. Russian President Putin seems to have preferred Trump, perhaps because Trump had made numerous comments indicating that he wanted to improve relations with Russia. The question arises, however, as to why he would order his spies to spread lies in order to harm the campaign of his preferred candidate? The answer is simple. Mr. Putin does not allow personal prejudices and preferences to interfere with his Machiavellian statesmanship.
From Russia’s standpoint, it didn’t matter who won. The aim was not to satisfy transient feelings about other leaders, but to weaken a competing nation. It doesn’t matter if you like your opponent personally or not. If they are opponents, and if you practice Machiavellian statesmanship, you act to weaken them. Attacking Hillary Clinton wasn’t very hard. No doubt, Putin knew that Hillary Clinton was very corrupt and that it would be easy to prove it. The evidence was likely to be found in her emails and those of the Democratic National Committee.
Putin ordered his hacking team to intercept a small sample of internal communications. After that was transferred to Wikileaks, it was released to the American public and it showed that Hillary Clinton had stolen the Democratic party nomination from Bernie Sanders, with the help of high officials at the DNC. He was also able to torpedo her claim that she supported middle class Americans. Instead, he proved that she is bought and paid for by Wall Street banks.
Attacking Trump was a little more difficult. The man was an eccentric billionaire, with a huge ego, an abrasive New York style personality, and a big mouth. But, attacking him required something more substantial than that. So, Putin turned creative. He had his spies feed false information to Fusion GPS and Steele, resulting in the compilation of the fake dossier.
The United States opposes Russia in many areas around the world. By covertly attacking both of its major party candidates, Putin sowed internal dissension, as recommended both by Machiavelli and by Sun Tsu in the ancient classic, “The Art of War“. To understand Putin, it is worth reading that ancient Chinese author’s work. The Kindle edition can be downloaded for free here. The end goal, in both cases, was always the same – to undermine American unity and faith in the system, and to suppress acceptance and support for the next American President.
After Trump was elected, Russian attempts to sow dissension inside the USA continued. For example, the New York Daily News reported on November 12, 2016, that a crowd of over 5,000 people gathered in Union Square in New York City around noon, their ranks rapidly growing and spilling out of the park. They were all protesting against the newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump. What the New York Daily New failed to report was that protest was organized by “BlackMattersUS”, a front group funded by Russia, using its Facebook page. On October 17, 2017, ABC News reported that the group had been tied by Congressional investigators to the Kremlin. Today, The Hill reported that the protest was organized by Russia through the use of Facebook, where the event was shared with 61,000 users, with 16,000 promising to attend.
Putin has succeeded magnificently. Thanks to his efforts, there has probably never been a time when Americans were more divided. When looked at from Putin’s Machiavellian standpoint, mounting covert attacks against both sides of the US election, would inevitably strengthen Russia’s hand no matter who won. It is important, therefore, to get to the bottom of Russia’s ability to disseminate deceptive information to the American people.
Unfortunately, our “intelligence services” have been played as unwitting fools by a master. They ended up assisting the Russians in their attempt to undermine America. With their help, Putin’s plan to disrupt America succeeded. Charges should be brought, against persons in the Clinton campaign, the DNC, and workers at the FBI itself, where appropriate. However, we must create concrete solutions to prevent such events from happening again. Instead of engaging in a futile attempt to impeach Donald Trump, Democrats in Congress should get a grip on themselves and start working with Republicans. We need to create a working solution that will prevent foreign malefactors from dividing us again.
